Their Original Brand Syouryu
Syouryu is an original brand which they at Shimatani Syouryu Kobo created in 2013. They were established in 1909 and has been manufacturing orin bowls for Buddhist temples since then. There are less than ten orin artisans in Japan, and three of them work for them. When they make an orin, they hammer a metal plate to shape and tune the sound. They have decided to develop additional products under the name of “syouryu” while still continuing to make orins.
Introducing Their New Product Suzugami
Their goals are to create new products which represent Takaoka, which only metalworking craftsmen can produce, and which people can use every day. These ideals prompted them to develop the “syouryu” brand and “Suzugami”—literally meaning “tin paper”—as the first product bearing the brand name. As the name implies, these are products made from tin. They are so thin that they can easily shape them by hand. They repeatedly beat a rolled tin sheet with a hammer and create patterns on the surface to add strength to the sheet. The products are then strong enough to be shaped multiple times. They succeeded in creating an item that only metalworking craftsmen can produce. Enjoy this new concept which their flexible metal Suzugami delivers.
